Research Studies Critical of Chiropractic Neck Manipulation

A number of studies published in peer reviewed medical research journals have explored the connection between chiropractic neck adjustments or cervical manipulation and strokes. Approximately 12 percent of American and Canadian adults seek chiropractic care each year, and 80 percent of these visits result in spinal manipulation.

Researchers have had difficulty estimating the number of chiropractic strokes because such strokes are significantly underreported.

  • A 1999 article in the medical research journal Physical Therapy identified 177 cases of injuries associated with cervical manipulation reported in medical studies. The majority of injuries were attributed to manipulation by chiropractors.
  • A 2001 study published in the medical journal Stroke found that patients under age 45 who had experienced a vertebrobasilar stroke were five times more likely to have visited a chiropractor in the preceding week. A group of 60 Canadian neurologists felt that the link between neck adjustments and stroke was so acute that they have issued a warning to Canadians about the risk.
